A stroke affects everyone in the family, so an important part of the Stroke Associations mission is to provide assistance to caregivers. Statistics show that stress from round-the-clock responsibilities seriously affects the health of family caregivers. Far too many people try to shoulder the burden alone without adequate resources. The Stroke Association is working to address this problem by offering these free programs:
- Support groups specifically for caregivers. We currently have groups in Downey, and Inglewood and plan to launch new ones in the year ahead.
- A telephone HelpLine which answers caregivers questions and also links callers to other existing groups in the region.
- A Community Resource Guide, 100 plus pages of useful information.
- A Stroke Caregivers Handbook, designed to help caregivers develop a strategy for dealing with their new situation. (This is a PDF file for downloading)
- A Powerpoint Presentation on Stroke Prevention for family caregivers. (This is a PowerPoint file for downloading MAC Version.sit OR PC Version.zip) Also, view it ONLINE.
- An annual Caring for the Caregiver Conference, produced in collaboration with a consortium of human service agencies called Educare.
- A literature collection of publications covering caregiving issues (articles and books) available upon request.
A 4-part Caregiver Workshop Series, with educational presentations on topics like Legal Issues, Stress Management, Hiring Help in the Home, etc. held in different sites in LA County.
