Graduation Day at the Stroke Recovery Program

If you’ve noticed that the title of our newsletter has changed from “The Road Back” to “The Road Ahead,” here is an explanation. Our memories are important, but life is lived in one direction. We may wish to return to the past to relive an experience or correct a mistake, but that can't happen. We live in the present and prepare for the future.

After stroke, it is understandable that we want to turn back the clock and restore our previous lives, for stroke affects every aspect of meaningful life. One way of trying to recapture “what was” is to characterize recovery as a “road back” to past health, functioning, and stability.
Another way to describe the recovery process is to use the metaphor, “The Road Ahead.” Stroke is experienced in the present. Loss, disability, distress, and uncertainty are felt intensely. What shall we do? The best choice is to move ahead as well as possible.
The disruption caused by stroke is universally unexpected and disorienting. Stroke is like a sudden tornado, and, as Dorothy says in the Wizard of Oz, “We aren’t in Kansas anymore.” When we are in an unfamiliar place, we need direction.
Fortunately, there is a well-known road to recovery. The Stroke Association of Southern California and knowledgeable survivors, families and professionals provide guidance and support on the road ahead.
And it is a good road, as we join with others to find answers to important questions. How can we cope with the trauma of stroke? How can we manage fear? How can we generate hope? How can we overcome isolation? What can we do to get better?
Recovery can be transforming. We discover we have choices in how we respond to illness. While we may have limited control during the acute phase of stroke, we do have significant control over the ultimate outcome.
Stroke can reveal the best within us. As we pass through stages of challenge and healing, we find courage, patience, determination, adaptability, love for others and life, and will to thrive. We discover we are stronger than we thought and that a good life is possible after stroke.
The “Road Ahead” is more enjoyable and productive when made in good company. Please join this journey of health, prevention, and recovery by becoming a member of the Stroke Association of Southern California.
